About Upland Hunt & Fish

Loon Lake, New York

Guiding the woods and waters of the northern Adirondacks

Welcome to Upland Hunt and Fish! Located in Loon Lake, NY, we're a short drive to the Adirondack mountain towns of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

As a child, I came to the Adirondacks, learning to fly fish on the famous Ausable River and the other world-class rivers and streams of the region. In 2021, I fulfilled a dream by moving here — and have been guiding these local woods and waters ever since.

I believe a guided hunting or fishing trip is so much more than fish caught or birds harvested. It's about immersing yourself in nature and stepping away from daily routines — something essential to our overall wellbeing.

Wilderness at Loon Lake, Northern Adirondacks

More Than a Day in the Field

Of course, the goal is always a trophy fish in the net or an elusive grouse in hand — but the unexpected sighting of a moose, or a glimpse of a snowshoe hare as we wind our way through the Adirondack wilderness, makes the experience so much more.

Our trips are about stepping into wild places, slowing down, and reconnecting with something steady and enduring. These are the moments that define time spent in the Adirondacks.

Meet the Dogs

For hunting clients — meet our dogs! Our string of French Brittanies include Gus, Luc, and Zeke. Also called the Épagneul Breton, the "EB" is a joy to hunt behind.

Their compact size — perfect for the tight cover of grouse and woodcock habitat — belies their enormous heart within. Their drive and instinct manifest into all-day passionate hunts in the field.

Meet the Rivers

Here in the northern Adirondacks, we don't lack for different and exciting water. Our primary rivers are the Chateaugay, Salmon, St. Regis, Saranac, and the West and East Branches of the famous Ausable River. All are freestone rivers, though dams exist on most.

These dams don't provide a traditional cold-water release tailwater, but due to our latitude and elevation you can expect sub-70° water temps in May, June, September, and October. The warmer months of July and August are the perfect time to discover backcountry brook trout or try your hand at river smallmouth bass fishing. There's also a solid chance that river temps on the major rivers will be just fine in the mid-summer months!

For Every Angler & Hunter

Whether you're an experienced angler or hunter — or new to the pursuits and simply looking to learn and spend a day outdoors in good country — Upland Hunt and Fish offers guided trips that allow you to fully experience the Adirondacks.

Thanks, and see you out there —

Chris Brennan

Northern Adirondacks

The Complete 2026 Hunting & Fishing Guide

Upland Hunting & Fly Fishing Adventures in the Northern Adirondacks

Plan Your Adventure

The Adirondack Park, a six-million-acre mosaic of towering peaks, pristine lakes, and dense forests, is a true gem of the American Northeast. Within this vast wilderness, the northern reaches offer a particularly rugged and rewarding experience for outdoor enthusiasts, especially those drawn to the thrill of upland hunting and the serene art of fly fishing.

Here at uplandhuntandfish.com, we believe the Northern Adirondacks represent a premier destination for these pursuits, and we're dedicated to providing an unparalleled hunting and fishing experience.

Why the Northern Adirondacks?

A Haven for Hunters and Anglers

The unique geography and diverse ecosystems of the Northern Adirondacks create an ideal habitat for a variety of game birds and a thriving ecosystem for cold-water fish. Unlike some of the more heavily trafficked areas of the park, the northern region often feels more remote, offering a true sense of wilderness and the opportunity to truly disconnect and immerse yourself in nature.

Upland Hunting: A Symphony of Skill and Scenery

For the upland hunter, the Northern Adirondacks are a dream come true. The region boasts healthy populations of ruffed grouse and woodcock, offering challenging and rewarding hunts amidst breathtaking scenery.

Ruffed Grouse: The King of the Northwoods

The ruffed grouse, known for its explosive flush and elusive nature, is a highly sought-after game bird. In the Northern Adirondacks, you'll find them in mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, particularly in areas with dense undergrowth, alder thickets, and old logging roads.

The thrill of watching a well-trained bird dog lock up on point, followed by the heart-stopping flush of a grouse, is an experience that keeps hunters coming back year after year.

Woodcock: The Timberdoodle's Enigma

The American woodcock, a migratory bird with a distinctive long bill and unique flight pattern, provides another exciting challenge for upland hunters. They prefer moist, young woodlands with dense cover, often found along stream bottoms and wetland edges. Their erratic flight through the trees demands quick reflexes and accurate shooting.

Hunting with Upland Hunting & Fishing

At uplandhuntandfish.com, we specialize in guided upland hunts tailored to your preferences and skill level. Our experienced guides possess intimate knowledge of the Northern Adirondack terrain and the habits of grouse and woodcock. They will lead you to prime coverts, offering insights into bird behavior and strategies for success. We focus on ethical hunting practices and ensuring a memorable and respectful experience in the field.

Fly Fishing: Casting Lines in Pristine Waters

Beyond the excitement of the hunt, the Northern Adirondacks offer some of the finest fly fishing opportunities in the East. The region is crisscrossed by countless rivers, streams, and remote ponds, many of which are teeming with native brook trout and feisty brown and rainbow trout.

Brook Trout: Jewels of the Adirondacks

The native brook trout, with its vibrant colors and aggressive strike, is the iconic fish of the Adirondacks. These beautiful fish thrive in the cold, oxygen-rich waters of the northern streams and ponds. Pursuing brook trout with a fly rod is a quintessential Adirondack experience, offering moments of quiet contemplation punctuated by the electrifying tug of a wild fish. You'll find them in both easily accessible waters and remote backcountry ponds that require a hike or paddle to reach.

Fly Fishing with Upland Hunting & Fishing

uplandhuntandfish.com provides expert-guided fly fishing trips for all skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner looking to learn the ropes, our guides will share their extensive knowledge of local entomology, fly patterns, and casting techniques. We'll take you to the most productive waters, ensuring you have the best chance to hook into some truly remarkable fish. We also offer instruction for those new to fly fishing, covering everything from knot tying to reading the water.

Beyond the Hunt and Cast: Exploring the Northern Adirondacks

While upland hunting and fly fishing are the main draws, the Northern Adirondacks offer a wealth of other activities to complement your outdoor adventure.

Hiking and Backpacking

The region is a hiker's paradise, with trails ranging from gentle strolls to challenging climbs. Explore the trails around Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, or venture into more remote areas for multi-day backpacking trips. The stunning vistas from mountain summits are truly unforgettable.

Paddling

With countless lakes and interconnected waterways, the Adirondacks are ideal for canoeing and kayaking. Explore the Saranac Lake Chain, the St Regis Wilderness Canoe Area, paddle a remote pond, or embark on a multi-day wilderness canoe trip. This is a fantastic way to access remote fishing spots and experience the tranquility of the wilderness.

Wildlife Viewing

The diverse habitats of the Northern Adirondacks support a wide array of wildlife. Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, black bears, moose, coyotes, bobcats, fishers and a variety of bird species, including the rare Bicknell's Thrush in the High Peaks.

Scenic Drives

Even a drive through the Northern Adirondacks is an experience in itself. The winding roads offer breathtaking views of mountains, lakes, and forests, especially during the vibrant fall foliage season.
